What Account Type Code 0G means
- Defined by the absence of a preset limit. The issuer evaluates spending capacity dynamically instead of publishing a fixed line.
- Reported as Portfolio Type R (Revolving) even though there is no preset limit, which creates the central reporting tension in this code.
- Does NOT mean unlimited credit. It means no preset limit, which is a different statement and one worth getting right in consumer-facing explanations.
- Does NOT cover a standard bankcard with a limit that happens to be raised often. If a limit is published to the consumer, the account is 18.
- The classic case is a premium charge card where the balance is expected to be paid in full but flexible-spending features let some balances revolve.
When to report 0G
- 1An issuer reports a premium no-preset-limit charge card carried by a high-spending consumer.
- 2An issuer reports a small-business card in the consumer's name with dynamic spending power rather than a fixed line.
- 3A card issuer reports an account where a portion of large purchases can be paid over time while the rest is due in full.
- 4An issuer reports a no-preset-limit card the consumer has held for fifteen years, where the age of the tradeline is the main value to the consumer.
Reporting rules
- Do not fabricate a Credit Limit. Inventing a number so a validator stops complaining creates a false utilization signal on the consumer's file.
- Report Highest Credit accurately and keep it current, since it is the only capacity anchor available on a no-preset-limit account.
- Use 18 when the product actually has a published limit, even a frequently adjusted one.
- Report the amount due in Scheduled Monthly Payment consistently with the product's payment terms.
- Do not switch an account between 0G and 18 as the issuer's internal limit logic changes. Consumers see the change as a new product.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 0G has to satisfy.
- Portfolio Type must be R (Revolving). Terms Duration is reported as REV, not as a month count.
- Portfolio Type R normally expects a Credit Limit, and 0G is the deliberate exception: there is no preset limit to report, so the field is not populated with a real line. This is exactly why the code exists as a separate account type.
- Because Credit Limit is absent, Highest Credit carries the whole burden of describing capacity. A zero or stale Highest Credit on a 0G tradeline leaves scoring models with nothing.
- Current Balance exceeding Highest Credit is normal on this product, not a data error, since a new high simply resets Highest Credit.
- Terms Frequency is M on a monthly-billed card.
- Authorized users are carried in ECOA and the J1 or J2 segment, which matters here because premium cards commonly carry several.
