What Account Type Code 07 means
- Two facts define it: the account revolves, and it is accepted only at the issuing merchant or its affiliated brands.
- Does NOT cover a co-branded card carrying a network logo that works anywhere. That is a general-purpose bankcard, code 18.
- Does NOT cover a fixed-term retail installment contract, which is 06 and has no credit limit.
- The issuing bank behind a private-label programme is usually the furnisher, and the tradeline typically displays the retailer's name so the consumer recognises it.
- A store account with a promotional deferred-interest plan inside it is still one revolving tradeline, not one revolving plus one installment.
When to report 07
- 1A department store's issuing bank reports a private-label card usable only in that chain.
- 2A home-improvement retailer reports a project card accepted only at its own stores.
- 3A fuel retailer reports a station-branded charge card with a monthly revolving balance.
- 4A specialty apparel brand reports a store card whose limit was increased after twelve months of on-time payments.
- 5A retailer reports a store card the consumer closed at their own request, keeping the tradeline reporting with a zero balance until it ages off.
Reporting rules
- Populate Credit Limit every cycle. A revolving tradeline with no limit forces the bureaus and scoring models to fall back on Highest Credit, which distorts utilization.
- Report Highest Credit as the highest balance ever carried, and update it when a new high is reached.
- Report the contractual minimum payment in Scheduled Monthly Payment Amount, and what the consumer actually paid in Actual Payment Amount.
- Do not stop reporting a zero-balance open store account. Silence looks like a closed account and costs the consumer the age and the available limit.
- Use 18 instead when the card carries a payment network and works outside the retailer.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 07 has to satisfy.
- Portfolio Type must be R (Revolving). That is what makes Credit Limit meaningful and required rather than zero-filled.
- Terms Duration is reported as REV on revolving accounts, never as a month count.
- Current Balance above Credit Limit is legitimate on a revolving account (over-limit, fees, interest) but it is a flagged condition, so make sure the limit you report is the current one and not a stale original.
- Terms Frequency is M on a monthly-billed revolving account.
- An authorized user on the account is expressed through ECOA and a J1 or J2 segment, not through Account Type.
- When the consumer asks to close the account, Date Closed and the Compliance Condition Code carry that fact; Account Type stays 07.
