What Account Type Code 06 means
- The contract is tied to the purchase of specific merchandise. That is what distinguishes it from a general-purpose unsecured loan under 01.
- Frequently assigned. A furniture store writes the contract and immediately assigns it to a sales-finance company, which then furnishes the tradeline.
- Does NOT cover revolving store credit. A store card the consumer can reuse is code 07 and Portfolio Type R.
- Does NOT cover a vehicle retail installment contract, which is reported under 00 because the format gives vehicles a dedicated code.
- Buy-now-pay-later plans with a fixed number of scheduled payments fit this shape when a furnisher chooses to report them, so long as the plan is a genuine fixed-term contract. A furnisher that starts reporting them takes on the same accuracy and investigation duties as any other furnisher, including for the very short terms these plans typically run.
When to report 06
- 1A furniture retailer's finance arm reports a 24-month contract for a bedroom set.
- 2A sales-finance company reports contracts assigned to it by appliance dealers, one tradeline per contract.
- 3A jeweller's finance partner reports a 12-payment fixed-term purchase plan.
- 4A consumer-electronics lender reports a 18-month promotional-rate purchase contract that converts to standard terms if not paid off in the promotional window.
- 5A medical-device seller reports a fixed-payment purchase contract for equipment sold directly to the consumer.
Reporting rules
- Use 07 instead if the consumer has an open store account they can charge against again.
- When the contract is assigned, the holder furnishes and the K1 segment names the original creditor so the consumer can recognise the tradeline.
- Report the cash price financed in Highest Credit, not the total of payments including finance charges. Inflating the origination amount with interest overstates the consumer's original obligation for the whole life of the tradeline.
- Leave Credit Limit zero-filled. A retail installment contract is not a line.
- Do not open a new tradeline for each promotional plan under one contract. One contract is one tradeline.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 06 has to satisfy.
- Portfolio Type must be I (Installment). Scheduled Monthly Payment Amount and a numeric Terms Duration in months follow from that.
- Credit Limit must be zero-filled, which is the sharpest structural difference between 06 and the revolving store account code 07.
- Terms Frequency is normally M, though W and B occur on short-term retail plans and are valid when they match the contract.
- When the paper is assigned, the K1 segment (Original Creditor Name) and, on a portfolio purchase, the K2 segment (Purchased From) become relevant on the holder's record.
- Highest Credit / Original Loan Amount is set once at origination and does not move as payments are applied.
