What Account Type Code 47 means
- Two things distinguish 47 from a plain personal line of credit: there is collateral, and there is no card.
- Typical collateral is a deposit account, a certificate of deposit, marketable securities, or titled personal property. Real-estate collateral moves the account to Account Type 89 (home-equity line of credit).
- Does NOT mean a secured credit card. A card-accessed secured revolving account is Account Type 2A and Portfolio Type R.
- Does NOT mean a secured installment loan. A one-time advance repaid on a fixed schedule against collateral is Account Type 02 or 03, Portfolio Type I.
- The presence of collateral changes the loss severity, not the reporting mechanics. Delinquency, charge-off, and status reporting follow the same rules as an unsecured line.
When to report 47
- 1A credit union reports a share-secured line of credit where the member's savings balance is pledged against the line.
- 2A bank furnishes a CD-secured line of credit used for short-term liquidity.
- 3A brokerage-affiliated bank reports a securities-backed line of credit held by a consumer in their own name.
- 4A lender reports a line secured by titled equipment that the consumer draws against seasonally.
- 5A bank reports a secured line that was frozen after the collateral value fell, leaving an outstanding balance on a closed-to-draws line.
Reporting rules
- Report the approved line as the Credit Limit and the outstanding advances as the Current Balance.
- Do not report the collateral's value anywhere. Metro 2 has no collateral-value field, and the Original Loan Amount field is not a substitute.
- Report a line frozen to new draws but still carrying a balance as open with the appropriate Account Status, not as closed, until the line is actually terminated.
- Do not use 47 for a home-equity line just because the HELOC is not card-accessed. Real-estate collateral is what selects Account Type 89.
- If the collateral is liquidated to satisfy the balance, report the resulting balance change on the same tradeline rather than opening a new one.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 47 has to satisfy.
- Portfolio Type must be C (Line of Credit).
- Portfolio Type C expects a populated Credit Limit, and Current Balance should normally be at or below it.
- Highest Credit records the peak drawn balance. On a line of credit, both Credit Limit and Highest Credit are meaningful and they are not the same number.
- Scheduled Monthly Payment reflects the contractual minimum for the current balance and may legitimately change month to month, unlike an installment account's fixed payment.
- Terms Frequency M is normal. A secured line reported with a one-time or single-payment frequency contradicts the revolving structure.
- Date Opened is the date the line was established, not the date of the first draw. A line opened months before it was first used still ages from its origination date.
- Date Closed must stay blank while the line remains available, even in cycles where the drawn balance is zero. A zero balance on a line of credit is not a closure.
- A co-borrower or guarantor on the line ships in a J1 or J2 segment with an ECOA code that reflects the actual liability, not as a duplicate Base Segment.
