What Account Type Code 9B means

    • The borrower is the business. The individual's exposure comes from a personal guarantee, which is a secondary obligation triggered by the business's default.
    • Distinct from Account Type 7A, where the individual is directly and personally liable as an obligor rather than as a guarantor.
    • The guarantee is what justifies furnishing a business obligation to a consumer bureau. Without it, the account belongs in commercial reporting only.
    • Does NOT mean a personal line of credit used by a business. A line underwritten to the individual is Account Type 15 or 47.
    • Does NOT mean a business credit card. Card-accessed business revolving accounts carry card account types and Portfolio Type R.

    When to report 9B

    • 1A bank reports a small-business line of credit personally guaranteed by the owner, drawn seasonally for working capital.
    • 2A lender reports a guaranteed business line where the guarantor's file carries the obligation while the business is the borrower of record.
    • 3A bank reports a guaranteed business line frozen to new draws while the outstanding balance is repaid.
    • 4A lender reports a guaranteed business line paid off and closed with the guarantee released.
    • 5A bank reports a guaranteed business line that charged off and on which the guarantee was called.

    Reporting rules

    • Furnish to a consumer bureau only where a written personal guarantee exists and you can evidence it.
    • Report the approved line as the Credit Limit and the drawn balance as the Current Balance.
    • Name the individual guarantor in the Base Segment consumer name fields, never the business.
    • Do not code as 9B a line on which the individual signed as a direct obligor; that is Account Type 7A.
    • Report consistently every cycle, including months with a zero drawn balance, rather than only when the guarantee is called.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 9B has to satisfy.

    • Portfolio Type must be C (Line of Credit).
    • Portfolio Type C expects a populated Credit Limit and a Highest Credit reflecting the peak drawn amount; the two are different numbers and both are meaningful on a business line.
    • The ECOA code must reflect a guarantor relationship rather than implying primary individual borrowing or authorized-user status. This is the single most consequential cross-field decision on this Account Type.
    • A second guarantor ships as a J1 or J2 associated consumer with an ECOA code describing that person's role, not as a duplicate Base Segment for the same line.
    • Scheduled Monthly Payment is the contractual minimum for the current balance and can move cycle to cycle, unlike an installment payment.
    • Date Closed is populated when the line is terminated and the guarantee released, not when the drawn balance merely reaches zero.
    • Current Balance above Credit Limit should be investigated: on a business line it usually indicates a stale limit after a reduction rather than a genuine over-advance.
    • Terms Frequency M is normal for a revolving line. An installment or single-payment frequency contradicts Portfolio Type C.
    • Date of First Delinquency runs from the first uncured delinquency on the line, and it does not restart when the guarantee is called.
