What Account Type Code 10 means

    • Purpose, not borrower type, defines the code. The proceeds fund a business.
    • Reaches the consumer file mainly through sole proprietorships and personally guaranteed small-business paper.
    • Does NOT cover a revolving business line of credit the borrower redraws. That product shape is a line of credit rather than an installment loan.
    • Does NOT cover agricultural operating credit, which has its own code (0A) because of its seasonal repayment pattern.
    • Furnishing business credit to a consumer bureau is a deliberate decision. If the obligation is genuinely the entity's and the consumer is not liable, it does not belong in the consumer file at all, and reporting it there is an accuracy problem no amount of correct field-level formatting fixes.

    When to report 10

    • 1A community bank reports a 60-month equipment-and-working-capital term loan to a sole proprietor.
    • 2An SBA-programme lender reports a term loan personally guaranteed by the owner.
    • 3A specialty lender reports a fixed-payment business expansion loan carried in the owner's name.
    • 4A bank reports a business acquisition loan where the individual buyer is a co-obligor.
    • 5A lender reports a term loan to a single-member LLC with a full personal guarantee from the member.

    Reporting rules

    • Confirm consumer liability before furnishing. A guarantee that has not been called is still a liability, but a loan with no consumer obligation at all does not belong in the consumer file.
    • Express the guarantor relationship through ECOA and a J1 or J2 segment rather than by choosing a different account type.
    • Report the original principal in Highest Credit and leave Credit Limit zero-filled.
    • Use 0A for farm operating credit so the seasonal repayment pattern is visible.
    • Apply the same delinquency and charge-off discipline you apply to consumer paper. Business loans in the consumer file are held to the same accuracy standard.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 10 has to satisfy.

    • Portfolio Type must be I (Installment), so Scheduled Monthly Payment Amount and a numeric Terms Duration in months are required.
    • Credit Limit must be zero-filled. A redrawable business facility is a line-of-credit product, not 10.
    • ECOA Code carries the consumer's role. A guarantor or co-obligor is reported through ECOA plus a J1 (same address) or J2 (different address) segment.
    • Terms Frequency is normally M; Q is legitimate on quarterly-amortizing commercial paper and should match the note.
    • The K3 segment is absent. A business loan secured by real estate is reported under the applicable mortgage code, not under 10.
    • Highest Credit / Original Loan Amount stays fixed at the original principal for the life of the tradeline.
