What Consumer Information Indicator S means
- The counterpart to Q, scoped to a different family of codes. S removes R, V and 2A; Q removes the bankruptcy codes A through H and the receivership code 1A.
- It removes the indicator, not the account. The tradeline, its balance, its status and its history all remain.
- Blanking the field is not the documented removal path. A dedicated deletion code exists precisely because a blank is not a retraction.
- Use it when the flag should never have been there: a reaffirmation that was never actually executed, a lease assumption that fell through, or a mapping error.
- It is not the code for a normal transition. A reaffirmation that gets rescinded is reported with V, not deleted with S.
- A furnisher migrating off the retired W, X and Y reaffirmation codes may need S to clear flags that a legacy mapping produced incorrectly, alongside correcting the mapping itself.
When to report S
- 1A lender finds that a proposed reaffirmation agreement was never filed with the court, and clears the R it had already reported.
- 2A lessor's pending lease assumption fails credit review after 2A was reported, so the flag is cleared and the original lessee resumes reporting.
- 3A servicer discovers a batch process applied reaffirmation flags to accounts in cases where no reaffirmation existed.
- 4A furnisher decommissioning a pre-2021 mapping table clears flags it produced in error while switching its output to the current codes.
Reporting rules
- Send S only to retract an indicator that was wrong. Use V, not S, when a real reaffirmation is rescinded.
- Send it once; there is nothing further to remove in later cycles.
- After clearing a 2A that should not have been reported, restore the consumer's real balance, past-due amount, and Account Status in the same file.
- Do not use S to clear a bankruptcy or receivership indicator. That is Q's job, and sending the wrong deletion code leaves the tag in place.
- Do not confuse S with the Account Status deletion codes, which remove the tradeline itself.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Consumer Information Indicator S has to satisfy.
- Clears R, V and 2A only. It has no effect on A through H or 1A.
- Does not delete the tradeline. Tradeline deletion is expressed through the Account Status deletion codes (DA and DF).
- Where a 2A is being retracted, Current Balance, Amount Past Due, Date Closed and Account Status all need to be restored to the true ongoing values in the same record.
- Does not change the Date of First Delinquency.
- Applies to the consumer named on the segment it is reported in, so clearing a Base Segment flag leaves a J1 or J2 flag untouched.
