What Consumer Information Indicator Q means
- Q is a deletion instruction for the INDICATOR, not for the account. The tradeline, its history, its balance and its status all remain on the file.
- It clears any of A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, or 1A. Per the source appendix the removal is immediate rather than taking effect at the next purge cycle.
- Blanking the field is not equivalent. A blank CII in a later record does not reliably retract a bankruptcy tag the bureaus are already holding, which is why a dedicated deletion code exists.
- Use it when the indicator should never have been there: the wrong consumer was tagged, a case was filed against a different person with a similar name, or a mapping error emitted a bankruptcy code for an account with no bankruptcy.
- It is not the code for a normal case outcome. A Chapter 7 that discharged is reported with E; a Chapter 13 plan that completed is reported with H. Q is for retraction, not resolution.
- It does not delete the account. Account deletion is done through the Account Status deletion codes, which are a different field with different consequences.
When to report Q
- 1A bank discovers a batch job tagged an entire portfolio segment with A because of a mapping default, and sends Q to retract the indicator.
- 2A servicer finds a bankruptcy notice was matched to the wrong consumer by name and date of birth, and clears the indicator from the tradeline it should never have touched.
- 3A furnisher's data-quality sweep finds receivership tags on accounts where the receivership was vacated by the court.
- 4A vendor migration double-applied bankruptcy indicators to both the Base Segment and the associated consumer's segment, and the non-filer's segment is cleared with Q.
Reporting rules
- Send Q when the indicator was wrong. Do not use it to move a case from pending to resolved; use the matching discharge code for that.
- Do not use Q as a routine end-of-case cleanup for a legitimate bankruptcy that ran its course. The discharge codes exist to carry that outcome.
- Send it once. There is nothing left to remove after the first successful cycle.
- Audit for tradelines carrying a petition-filed code with no active case behind it. Each one is either a missing discharge update or a Q candidate, and telling those two apart is the point of the review.
- Do not confuse Q with the Account Status deletion codes; deleting an account is a much larger action than clearing an indicator.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Consumer Information Indicator Q has to satisfy.
- Clears A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and 1A. It does not clear R, V or 2A; those are removed with S.
- Does not change the Date of First Delinquency. If a bankruptcy indicator was removed because it was wrong, review the DOFD separately, since a wrong indicator may have masked an incorrectly frozen date.
- Does not change Account Status, Current Balance, Date Closed, or the Payment History Profile.
- Does not delete the tradeline. Tradeline deletion is expressed through the Account Status deletion codes (DA and DF), which are a different field entirely.
- Applies to the consumer named on the segment it is reported in, so clearing a Base Segment indicator does not clear one on a J1 or J2 segment.
