What Account Type Code 67 means
- Direct and unsecured. The funds came from the government agency itself and nothing was pledged against them.
- The distinction from code 65 is who lent the money. A guaranteed loan involves a private lender; a direct loan does not.
- The distinction from code 68 is collateral. Both are direct government loans; only 68 is secured.
- Does NOT mean a government benefit or grant. Money that was never intended to be repaid is a grant (69), and money paid in error that must be returned is an overpayment (70 or 75).
- The furnisher is usually the agency or its contracted servicer, reporting under the agency's subscriber code.
When to report 67
- 1A federal agency reports a direct unsecured loan being repaid on a fixed monthly schedule.
- 2An agency servicer reports a direct unsecured loan in an authorized deferment period with no payment due.
- 3An agency reports a direct unsecured loan that defaulted and is now in an administrative collection status.
- 4An agency reports a direct unsecured loan rehabilitated after default and returned to a scheduled repayment plan.
- 5An agency reports a direct unsecured loan paid in full and closed at a zero balance.
Reporting rules
- Report the disbursed principal as the Original Loan Amount and the current payoff principal as the Current Balance.
- Do not merge multiple separate disbursements into one tradeline unless they were legally consolidated into one obligation.
- Report an authorized deferment or an income-driven payment amount accurately in the payment fields rather than continuing to report the standard payment.
- Do not recode to 74 (government miscellaneous debt) when the loan defaults. A defaulted loan is still a loan.
- Where the agency consolidates several loans into one new obligation, close the prior tradelines and report the consolidation as a new account rather than editing balances across the old ones.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 67 has to satisfy.
- Portfolio Type must be I (Installment).
- Portfolio Type I obliges you to populate Terms Duration and, while in repayment, Scheduled Monthly Payment. A zero scheduled payment is only defensible when the loan is genuinely in a deferment or an income-driven zero-payment plan, and the Account Status must say so.
- Credit Limit must be blank or zero on Portfolio Type I.
- Terms Frequency should be M for a standard monthly repayment schedule.
- Original Loan Amount must be non-zero and stable. Consolidation creates a new tradeline rather than a restated original amount on the old one.
- Where the loan is consolidated, the closed tradeline should carry an Account Status reflecting payment through consolidation and a populated Date Closed, and the new obligation gets its own Date Opened.
- Date Opened is the disbursement date of this loan. A tradeline whose Date Opened is later than the Date of Account Information it ships with fails a basic date-logic edit.
- Amount Past Due must agree with the Payment History Profile and Account Status. An agency loan reported as delinquent with a zero Amount Past Due is a contradiction the bureaus can reject.
