What Special Comment Code CJ means
- CJ belongs on a collection tradeline, whether furnished by an agency working the account or by a debt buyer that owns it.
- CJ says the collection was paid. It does NOT say the underlying debt was never delinquent, and it does not remove the collection from the report.
- CJ does NOT mean the balance was paid in full if it was settled for less. A settled-for-less-than-full outcome is carried by Account Status, not by this comment.
- CJ does NOT apply to an original creditor's own account that simply paid off. That is an ordinary paid-and-closed outcome.
- CJ is terminal and stays on the tradeline; there is no condition to remove later.
When to report CJ
- 1A collection agency reports that a placed medical account was paid in full and closes the tradeline.
- 2A debt buyer closes a purchased card balance after the consumer completes payment.
- 3An agency working a defaulted utility balance closes the account after the consumer settles it.
- 4A recovery department closes a charged-off balance that the consumer paid after placement.
Reporting rules
- Populate Date Closed and report a zero Current Balance when the collection is satisfied.
- Report the honest Account Status for the outcome, including where the account was settled rather than paid in full.
- Do not report CJ while a balance remains outstanding.
- Keep the Date of First Delinquency that came with the account from the original creditor; a paid collection never resets it.
- If a K1 Original Creditor Name Segment is in use, keep it populated on the closing record so the consumer can identify the debt.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code CJ has to satisfy.
- Current Balance and Amount Past Due must be zero, with Date Closed populated.
- Account Status 13 (paid and closed with a zero balance) or the applicable paid-collection status is the natural partner; the account must not still report an open collection status.
- A K1 Original Creditor Name Segment is expected on agency and debt-buyer tradelines so the consumer can trace the original obligation.
- A K2 Purchased From/Sold To Segment applies where the debt was purchased rather than placed.
- Date of First Delinquency carries forward from the original creditor and never moves on payment.
