What Special Comment Code CH means
- CH says the closure was the lender's decision. That is the whole distinction against CI, which says the consumer asked.
- CH applies to a credit line: the available credit is gone. The account may still carry a balance the consumer pays down under the original terms.
- CH does NOT mean the consumer defaulted. Lines are closed for inactivity, risk-model changes, and product retirements as often as for performance.
- CH does NOT mean the balance was paid. Closing a line and paying it off are separate events.
- Reporting CH when the consumer actually requested the closure misstates a fact consumers frequently and correctly challenge.
When to report CH
- 1A card issuer closes an inactive credit card line after eighteen months with no activity.
- 2A lender reduces exposure across a portfolio and closes lines that no longer meet risk criteria.
- 3A bank retires a legacy card product and closes the remaining lines rather than migrating them.
- 4A home-equity lender freezes and then closes a line after a collateral revaluation.
Reporting rules
- Report CH only where the grantor genuinely initiated the closure.
- Populate Date Closed in the same record.
- Do not report CH alongside a Credit Limit that implies the line is still available for use.
- Do not use CH on an installment loan; a loan that reaches maturity is not a closed credit line.
- If the consumer requested the closure, CI is the accurate comment and CH is a factual error on the report.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code CH has to satisfy.
- Applies to Portfolio Type R (Revolving) and C (Line of Credit). CH on Portfolio Type I (Installment) is a contradiction.
- Requires Date Closed to be populated.
- Current Balance may remain greater than zero while the consumer pays down a closed line; in that case Account Status must not report the account as paid.
- Credit Limit and Highest Credit should be consistent with a line that is no longer available for new advances.
- Amount Past Due continues to report normally against whatever payment is still required.
