What Special Comment Code AP means
- The distinction AP carries is who initiated the closure. A consumer-initiated closure reads very differently from a grantor-initiated one.
- AP does NOT mean the balance is zero. An account can be closed at the consumer's request while a balance is paid down under the original terms.
- AP does NOT close the account by itself. Account Status and Date Closed do that; AP explains the reason.
- Where the thing closed is specifically a credit line rather than the whole account, CI carries the consumer-initiated version of that event.
- In this library, the consumer-requested closure comment is AP. A conflicting in-repo list assigns that meaning to AC; that reading is not used here.
When to report AP
- 1A cardholder calls to close a credit card and the issuer closes it with a zero balance.
- 2A borrower asks a lender to close a personal line of credit after paying it off.
- 3A consumer closes a retail charge account in writing after a dispute with the store is settled.
- 4A member asks a credit union to close a share-secured card and the collateral is released.
Reporting rules
- Populate Date Closed in the same record. A closure comment with no Date Closed is a contradiction.
- Do not report AP when the grantor closed the account for inactivity, risk, or delinquency. That is CH territory when a credit line is involved, or simply CM.
- Report the comment in the cycle of closure; there is no need to repeat a closure explanation forever once the account is finished.
- Do not use AP to imply the consumer was in good standing. Account Status carries that.
- If the closure was reported in error, correct the record rather than layering another comment on top.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code AP has to satisfy.
- Requires Date Closed to be populated in the same Base Segment record.
- Pairs naturally with Account Status 13 (paid and closed with a zero balance) when the balance was settled at closure.
- If Current Balance is still greater than zero, Account Status must describe an open-but-closed-to-further-use condition rather than a paid status.
- Amount Past Due should be zero on a consumer-requested closure of an account in good standing; a past-due amount alongside AP invites a status-payment mismatch edit.
- Do not report a Credit Limit that implies the line is still usable after the closure is reported.
