What Consumer Information Indicator T means
- Says the GRANTOR cannot locate the consumer. It is not a statement that the consumer is avoiding you, and it carries no accusation.
- It is not a delinquency code. An account can be current and still carry T if mail is returned and contact information has gone stale.
- The source appendix notes that T is often accompanied by an open dispute condition in the Compliance Condition Code field. Those are two independent fields, and each is populated on its own terms rather than because the other is set.
- It does not authorise any change to the DOFD, the balance, or the status. Losing contact does not change what is owed.
- It is cleared by U once the consumer is located, not by blanking the field.
When to report T
- 1A card issuer has statements returned as undeliverable for three consecutive cycles with no forwarding address and no working phone number.
- 2An auto lender cannot reach a borrower after a repossession attempt finds the vehicle and the consumer both gone from the last known address.
- 3A servicer's address-hygiene vendor returns no match for a consumer whose mail keeps bouncing, and a skip-trace request is opened.
- 4A collection furnisher exhausts its contact channels on an account and marks it as unlocatable while continuing to furnish accurately.
Reporting rules
- Report T only after your own contact attempts have genuinely failed. It is a factual statement about your records.
- Keep furnishing the account monthly. Losing contact is not a reason to stop reporting an obligation you still hold.
- Report U as soon as the consumer is located. A stale T on an account you have been speaking to for months is inaccurate.
- Do not use T as a shortcut for an address you never collected properly in the first place. Fix the address data.
- Do not treat T as a collection tactic or as pressure. It is a reporting fact.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Consumer Information Indicator T has to satisfy.
- The consumer's address fields keep reporting the last known address you hold; T does not blank them.
- Account Status, Current Balance and Amount Past Due are unaffected by a locate condition and continue reporting the truth.
- Date of First Delinquency is unaffected. Losing contact does not freeze or reset it.
- The Compliance Condition Code is a separate field. If a dispute is open at the same time, that condition is recorded there on its own merits.
- The indicator applies to the consumer named on the segment. If you can reach the co-obligor on a J1 or J2 segment, that consumer is not unlocatable.
