What Payment History Profile Code 5 means
- Five scheduled payments outstanding. Most unsecured portfolios charge off at or before this point, so a long run of 5s is unusual and worth checking.
- Because 6 is a catch-all for everything beyond 180 days, 5 is the last character that carries a precise 30-day meaning.
- A 5 appearing without a 4 in the adjacent older position means the account skipped a rung, which is nearly always a servicing-feed problem rather than a real event.
- Does NOT mean charged off. Charge-off is an accounting decision you make and report as L, not something that happens automatically at a day count.
- Does NOT mean the collateral was recovered. Recovery is K (repossession) or J (voluntary surrender).
When to report 5
- 1A credit union reports an auto loan five instalments behind while the borrower negotiates a reinstatement.
- 2A card issuer reports a cardholder at 150 days in the cycle immediately before a scheduled charge-off.
- 3A mortgage servicer reports a borrower five payments behind while a foreclosure referral is prepared.
- 4A private student-loan servicer reports a loan five payments behind in the month before default is declared.
Reporting rules
- Keep advancing the ladder every month the account stays behind and deepens by another cycle.
- Do not hold an account at 5 indefinitely. Once it passes 180 days, the correct character is 6.
- Anchor the Date of First Delinquency to the original missed payment, roughly five months earlier.
- If your portfolio charges off at 180 days, plan for the transition: the charge-off month reports L and the Account Status moves to 97 in the same record.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment History Profile Code 5 has to satisfy.
- Position 1 must match the current Payment Rating. A 5 in position 1 pairs with Payment Rating 5 (150 to 179 days past due).
- 5 in position 1 corresponds to Account Status 83 (150 to 179 days past due).
- A Date of First Delinquency is mandatory at this depth.
- Amount Past Due should reflect five outstanding scheduled payments and should be consistent with Current Balance.
- No gaps: a 5 must sit in a consecutive run, and no character milder than L may appear in a position more recent than an L.
