What Payment History Profile Code 0 means

    • Means the account was current at the close of that reporting month, not that the balance was zero. A revolving card carrying a balance and paying its minimum on time reports 0 every month.
    • A single 0 does not undo the months around it. A profile reading 0 0 1 0 0 still contains a 30-day late at position 3, and that late month stays where it is for the remaining life of the window.
    • Curing a delinquency changes the CURRENT month to 0. It does not retroactively rewrite the earlier positions that were genuinely late, and rewriting them is the most common way a furnisher creates an inconsistency between the profile and the Date of First Delinquency.
    • Does NOT mean paid in full, paid off, or closed. Those are D, plus the Account Status and Date Closed fields.
    • Does NOT mean no history. A month with no history is B or D, never 0. Zero-filling unknown months is the single most damaging shortcut in this field because it manufactures a clean payment record that never happened.

    When to report 0

    • 1A credit union reports a 60-month new-auto loan in month 14 where the borrower has paid every instalment on the due date; positions 1 through 14 are all 0.
    • 2A revolving card account carrying a rolling balance where the cardholder pays at least the minimum by the statement due date each cycle.
    • 3A mortgage servicer reports a loan that was 30 days late nine months ago and has been paid on time since; positions 1 through 8 are 0 and position 9 is 1.
    • 4A retail instalment account where the consumer brought a past-due balance current this month, so position 1 becomes 0 while the earlier delinquency characters stay untouched.

    Reporting rules

    • Report 0 only for a month you can evidence as paid as agreed. If you do not have payment history for that month, B is the honest character.
    • Do not back-fill 0 into months that predate the account's opening. Those positions get B.
    • Do not overwrite a prior month's delinquency character with 0 because the account later cured. Cure moves position 1; it does not erase position 5.
    • When an account cures out of delinquency, change the Account Status to the current status and the Payment Rating to 0 in the same record that puts 0 in position 1.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment History Profile Code 0 has to satisfy.

    • Position 1 must match the current Payment Rating. A 0 in position 1 with any Payment Rating other than 0 is the classic position-1 mismatch edit.
    • 0 in position 1 pairs with a non-delinquent Account Status such as 11 (current account) or a paid or closed status. It contradicts the delinquency statuses 71, 78, 80, 82, 83 and 84, which by definition say the account is past due right now.
    • 0 in position 1 normally means Amount Past Due is zero. A current month with a populated Amount Past Due is an amount-versus-status contradiction.
    • The string must fill from position 1 without gaps, so a 0 cannot sit behind an unpopulated position.
    • An all-0 profile on an account that also carries a Date of First Delinquency is contradictory: either the delinquency fell outside the 24-month window, in which case the record should be reviewed, or one of the two fields is wrong.
