What Payment History Profile Code 2 means

    • Means two scheduled payments are outstanding, not that the consumer has been silent for 60 days. A borrower who makes a partial payment can still roll from 1 to 2 if a full contractual payment remains unmade.
    • In a healthy string, 2 sits immediately in front of a 1 when read from older to newer months, because the account walked the ladder. A 2 with a 0 directly behind it in time means the account went from current to two cycles behind in one month, which is usually a data problem rather than a real event.
    • A cure from 2 goes straight to 0 in the month the account is brought fully current. There is no requirement to step back down through 1.
    • Does NOT mean the account is in collection or charged off. Those are separate characters with separate statuses.
    • Does NOT change the Date of First Delinquency. The date was set when the account first went delinquent and stays fixed through 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

    When to report 2

    • 1A credit union reports an auto loan where the borrower missed both the March and April instalments; March reports 1 and April reports 2.
    • 2A card issuer reports a cardholder two statement cycles behind after a disputed autopay failure was not caught in time.
    • 3A mortgage servicer reports a borrower who missed two consecutive monthly instalments during a period of unemployment.
    • 4A personal-loan lender reports the second consecutive missed payment before the account is referred to internal recovery.

    Reporting rules

    • Advance from 1 to 2 only when a second full contractual payment goes unmade. A partial payment that does not satisfy a full instalment does not stop the roll.
    • Keep the Date of First Delinquency fixed at the original delinquency, not the month the account reached 60 days.
    • Update Amount Past Due to reflect two outstanding payments in the same record.
    • Do not skip rungs. If your servicing system produces a 0 followed by a 2 in adjacent months, investigate the gap before filing.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment History Profile Code 2 has to satisfy.

    • Position 1 must match the current Payment Rating. A 2 in position 1 pairs with Payment Rating 2 (60 to 89 days past due).
    • 2 in position 1 corresponds to Account Status 78 (60 to 89 days past due).
    • A Date of First Delinquency must be present. By the time an account reaches 60 days the original delinquency is at least two months old and is a reportable date.
    • Amount Past Due should be roughly two scheduled payments, and Current Balance should be consistent with an account that has not been paid down for two cycles.
    • No gaps: the run of delinquency characters must be consecutive from position 1 backward through the months it covers.
