What Payment History Profile Code 1 means

    • Marks a single missed cycle. The consumer missed one scheduled payment and has not yet missed a second.
    • A payment made a few days late but within the same billing cycle is not a 1. The character records the state at the end of the reporting month, after the grace period, not every late-by-a-day event.
    • 1 is the character that most often appears exactly once in an otherwise clean profile, and it is also the character most often disputed, because a single 30-day late has a disproportionate effect on how the grid reads.
    • Does NOT mean 30 days since the last payment. It means one full contractual payment is outstanding.
    • Does NOT roll forward on its own. If the consumer misses the next cycle too, the following month reports 2, not another 1.

    When to report 1

    • 1A credit union reports a 60-month new-auto loan where the borrower missed the March payment and made the April payment on time; March reports 1 and April reports 1 or 2 depending on whether March was made up.
    • 2A card issuer reports a cardholder who let one statement go unpaid after a change of address delayed the bill.
    • 3A mortgage servicer reports a borrower who missed one monthly instalment following a payroll interruption and cured the following month.
    • 4A retail instalment lender reports the first missed payment on a 12-month promotional financing plan.

    Reporting rules

    • Report 1 for the month in which the account was one cycle behind, and advance to 2 only if a second cycle is missed without the first being made up.
    • Populate the Date of First Delinquency the first time an account rolls into 1 and does not cure. That date does not move as the delinquency deepens.
    • Do not report 1 for a payment that arrived inside the grace period. That is a current month.
    • When the consumer cures, put 0 in position 1 for the current month and leave the historic 1 exactly where it is.
    • Do not use 1 as a soft substitute when the account is genuinely further behind. The ladder is factual, not discretionary.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment History Profile Code 1 has to satisfy.

    • Position 1 must match the current Payment Rating. A 1 in position 1 pairs with Payment Rating 1 (30 to 59 days past due).
    • 1 in position 1 corresponds to Account Status 71 (30 to 59 days past due). Reporting 1 in position 1 with a current status is a status-versus-history mismatch.
    • Any delinquency character in the profile, including a single 1, implies a Date of First Delinquency must be present on the record if the delinquency was never cured.
    • Amount Past Due should be populated and should be consistent with roughly one missed scheduled payment.
    • The string fills from position 1 without gaps, so a 1 must sit in a consecutive run with the months around it.
