What Payment History Profile Code J means
- The distinguishing fact is that the consumer initiated the return. If you sent a recovery agent, the character is K, not J.
- Voluntary surrender is still a default outcome. It is not a neutral or positive event just because the consumer cooperated.
- Any deficiency remaining after the collateral is sold continues to be reported through the balance fields, and the account does not become current because the collateral is gone.
- Does NOT mean the debt was satisfied. Surrendering a vehicle worth less than the loan leaves a deficiency the consumer still owes.
- Does NOT apply to real property foreclosure. A completed foreclosure is H even where the borrower cooperated with the process.
When to report J
- 1A credit union reports the month a borrower drove a financed vehicle back to the branch and handed over the keys.
- 2An indirect auto lender reports a voluntary surrender arranged by phone before any recovery agent was assigned.
- 3A powersports or marine lender reports collateral returned voluntarily after the borrower could no longer afford the payments.
- 4An equipment lender reports a consumer-financed item returned voluntarily under the contract's surrender terms.
Reporting rules
- Report J only where the return was genuinely voluntary. A surrender arranged after a repossession order was executed is K.
- Report the surrender in the month it happened. Earlier months keep the delinquency characters that were true at the time.
- Continue to report the deficiency balance accurately after the collateral is liquidated.
- Keep the Date of First Delinquency anchored to the original missed payment.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment History Profile Code J has to satisfy.
- Payment Rating does not publish a J value, so a J in position 1 must be reconciled against Account Status rather than mechanically against Payment Rating.
- J in position 1 corresponds to Account Status 95 (voluntary surrender).
- Normally a Portfolio Type I (Installment) secured account. A voluntary surrender on an unsecured revolving account has no collateral to surrender and is a portfolio-type contradiction.
- A Date of First Delinquency is required where the surrender followed an uncured delinquency.
- Current Balance should reflect the deficiency after liquidation, not the pre-surrender balance, once the collateral has been sold.
