What Special Comment Code AU means
- AU describes a plan aimed at catching the account up. That is its distinguishing feature against AB, which asserts that a formal agreement governs payment generally.
- AU is true only while the plan is in force and being performed. It comes off when the plan completes or the borrower falls out of it.
- AU does NOT mean the arrears were forgiven. A repayment plan repays them on a schedule.
- AU does NOT convert a delinquent account to current on its own. The account becomes current when the arrears are actually cured.
- In this library, AU means repayment plan. A conflicting in-repo list labels AU "Account closed due to inactivity"; that reading is not used here.
When to report AU
- 1A mortgage servicer spreads four months of missed payments across the next twelve payments and reports the loan on a plan while the borrower performs.
- 2A card issuer places a delinquent account on a fixed-payment catch-up program.
- 3A student-loan servicer enrolls a borrower in a structured plan to bring a defaulted balance back into good standing.
- 4An auto lender agrees to a schedule that adds a partial arrears payment to each of the next six installments.
Reporting rules
- Report AU for every cycle the plan is live and the borrower is performing under it.
- Remove it in the first file after the plan completes or the borrower defaults on it.
- Do not use AU on an account with no arrears and no plan. It is not a general-purpose soft comment.
- Keep Account Status truthful while the plan runs. A plan in progress does not retroactively make missed payments on-time payments.
- If the plan permanently re-writes the loan's terms, CN is the accurate comment from that point.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code AU has to satisfy.
- Scheduled Monthly Payment should equal the amount actually required under the plan for the cycles the plan governs.
- Amount Past Due should decline over the life of a plan that is being performed; a flat past-due amount alongside AU is a contradiction worth checking.
- Date of Last Payment and Actual Payment Amount should show payments arriving on the plan's cadence.
- Date of First Delinquency is unaffected by entering a repayment plan and stays anchored to the original delinquency.
- When the arrears are fully cured, Account Status returns to current and the comment comes off in the same record.
