What Special Comment Code CN means

    • CN describes an amendment to the existing contract. The tradeline continues; it does not close and reopen.
    • CN is the key distinction against AS: a modification amends the loan in place, while a refinance replaces it with a new obligation and a new tradeline.
    • CN does NOT mean the debt was reduced, although a modification may change what the borrower pays each month.
    • CN does NOT cure a prior delinquency by itself. A modification changes future obligations; the history before it stays as reported.
    • A modification usually changes something measurable. If Scheduled Monthly Payment, Terms Duration, and Terms Frequency all stayed identical, check whether a modification actually occurred.

    When to report CN

    • 1A mortgage servicer completes a permanent loan modification that lowers the rate and extends the term after a trial period.
    • 2A lender permanently re-amortizes a consumer loan following a hardship, changing the monthly payment and maturity.
    • 3A credit union restructures a member's auto loan with a new maturity rather than writing a new contract.
    • 4A servicer converts a temporary interest-only workout into a permanent modified payment schedule.

    Reporting rules

    • Report CN from the cycle the modification takes effect, and update the terms fields in the same record.
    • Do not use CN for a temporary arrangement. A pause is B or C, a deferral is AI, an interest-only workout is AC, and a catch-up plan is AU.
    • Do not use CN for a refinance. AS marks the closing tradeline and the replacement loan reports separately.
    • Do not restart the tradeline. Date Opened, the payment history, and any Date of First Delinquency carry forward.
    • Keep the modified terms and the reported terms in sync every cycle afterward.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code CN has to satisfy.

    • Scheduled Monthly Payment, Terms Duration, and Terms Frequency should be updated in the same record to the modified values.
    • Date Opened must NOT change. A modification is not a new account.
    • Date of First Delinquency stays anchored to the original delinquency if one occurred before the modification.
    • Current Balance may change if arrears were capitalized into the principal; that increase should be traceable to the modification.
    • Account Status reports the account's real condition after modification, which is commonly current once the borrower is performing under the new terms.
