What Special Comment Code H means
- The source lists H and O on a single row, both printing the comment "Transferred". It states no distinction between them, and this library does not invent one. Confirm with your bureau contact which of the two they expect for your portfolio rather than guessing.
- H marks the end of the transferring furnisher's reporting. From the transfer forward, the receiving party reports the account.
- H does NOT mean the consumer paid the account off. A transferred balance is still owed to someone.
- H does NOT mean the account closed for cause, and it says nothing about the consumer's performance.
- Where the move is specifically to another office of the same organization, AN is the more precise comment.
When to report H
- 1A mortgage originator transfers servicing to a new servicer and closes out its own reporting on the loan.
- 2A lender sells a portfolio and the selling furnisher's tradeline stops updating in the cycle of transfer.
- 3A card issuer transfers a book of accounts to an acquiring institution.
- 4A furnisher hands a defaulted account to an outside recovery party that will report it going forward.
Reporting rules
- Report H in the cycle the transfer takes effect on the transferring furnisher's record.
- Stop updating the tradeline afterward. Two parties reporting the same live obligation creates a duplicate.
- Do not report a zero balance as if the consumer paid it; a transfer is not a payoff.
- If the receiving party is another office of your own organization, use AN.
- Confirm with your bureau contact whether they expect H or O for this event before standardizing on one.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code H has to satisfy.
- Account Status 05 (transferred to another office) is the usual partner status on the transferring furnisher's final record.
- A K2 Purchased From/Sold To Segment names the counterparty where the balance was sold or assigned to another party.
- Date of First Delinquency and the Payment History Profile transfer to the receiving party unchanged; the receiving tradeline must not re-age the debt.
- Date Opened stays at the original origination date on both the transferring and the receiving tradeline.
- The receiving party's tradeline normally carries a K1 Original Creditor Name Segment so the consumer can identify the original obligation.
