What Account Type Code 91 means

    • Defined by the use of proceeds. The loan itself is an ordinary fixed-term installment loan; what makes it a consolidation is that it retired other debts.
    • Consolidation creates a new obligation. The paid-off accounts close on their own tradelines and the consolidation loan opens with its own Date Opened.
    • Does NOT mean a debt settlement or a debt-management plan. Those arrangements do not advance funds and are not a consolidation loan.
    • Does NOT mean a balance transfer. Moving balances onto an existing revolving account changes the balance on that account; it does not create an installment loan.
    • Does NOT mean the consolidated debts disappear from the file. Their history stays on the closed tradelines for the normal reporting period.

    When to report 91

    • 1A bank reports a 48-month unsecured consolidation loan whose proceeds paid off four credit card balances.
    • 2A credit union reports a consolidation loan for a member combining several installment obligations into one payment.
    • 3A lender reports a consolidation loan on which the borrower is being repaid on schedule and the balance falls monthly.
    • 4A lender reports a consolidation loan that went delinquent after the borrower re-accumulated revolving balances.
    • 5A lender reports a consolidation loan paid in full at maturity and closes the tradeline at zero.

    Reporting rules

    • Report the funded amount as the Original Loan Amount and the remaining principal as the Current Balance.
    • Set Date Opened to the date the consolidation loan funded, not the earliest date of the debts it retired.
    • Do not adjust the retired accounts' histories. They close as paid; their delinquency history remains as it occurred.
    • Do not code a revolving balance-transfer product as 91. It is not an installment loan.
    • Report the loan every cycle, including the months when the balance is unchanged because of a deferment.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Account Type Code 91 has to satisfy.

    • Portfolio Type must be I (Installment).
    • Portfolio Type I requires Terms Duration in months and a populated Scheduled Monthly Payment, and does not use Credit Limit.
    • Date Opened must be the consolidation funding date and must not precede it. A Date Opened earlier than the funding date creates a date-logic failure against the Original Loan Amount.
    • Original Loan Amount must be greater than zero and stable for the life of the loan.
    • Terms Frequency is normally M (Monthly) and must agree with the Scheduled Monthly Payment.
    • The paid-off tradelines should carry an Account Status reflecting paid and closed with a populated Date Closed; leaving them open alongside the consolidation double-counts the consumer's obligations.
    • Credit Limit must be blank or zero. A consolidation loan is a closed-end obligation with no line behind it, and a populated limit triggers utilization edits it cannot satisfy.
    • Date of First Delinquency belongs to this loan alone. It runs from the first missed installment on the consolidation loan and is never inherited from the accounts the loan retired.
    • Amount Past Due must reconcile with the Payment History Profile and Account Status.
    • A co-borrower ships in a J1 or J2 segment with a joint or co-maker ECOA code, never as a second Base Segment for the same loan.
