What Payment Rating 2 means
- Rating 2 means two full cycles have gone unpaid, measured from the contractual due date of the oldest unpaid payment.
- The Date of First Delinquency does not move when the rating advances from 1 to 2. The DOFD is anchored to the start of the delinquency that never cured, and it is the same date it was a month earlier.
- It does not mean two separate late payments at different times. Two isolated 30-day lates a year apart are two rating-1 events, not a rating 2.
- It does not imply any adverse action. Acceleration, repossession, and charge-off are separate decisions expressed through Account Status, not through the rating.
When to report 2
- 1A credit union reports an auto loan where the borrower has missed two consecutive monthly payments and has made no partial payment.
- 2A card issuer reports a revolving account 65 days past due after two missed minimum payments.
- 3A servicer reports a mortgage in the second month of an uncured delinquency while a loss-mitigation application is pending.
- 4A private student lender reports a loan two cycles behind after an unsuccessful forbearance request.
Reporting rules
- Advance the rating only when the account genuinely crosses 60 days. Advancing early makes the tradeline harsher than the contract supports.
- Keep the Date of First Delinquency stable across the whole uncured delinquency. Rolling it forward each month is a serious FCRA problem because it extends the reporting period.
- Report a partial cure honestly. If a payment brings the account back inside 30 to 59 days, the rating returns to 1 while the DOFD stays where it was.
- Do not use a delinquent rating as shorthand for an account you have simply stopped servicing. If the account has ended, the Account Status has to say so.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment Rating 2 has to satisfy.
- Corresponds to Account Status 78 in the delinquency ladder.
- Requires a Date of First Delinquency, and that date must not move as the rating advances through the ladder.
- Amount Past Due should be consistent with two missed scheduled payments, which for a level-payment installment loan is roughly twice the Scheduled Monthly Payment.
- Position 1 of the Payment History Profile must agree with the current rating.
- Not valid alongside the transfer and sale statuses 61 through 65, which require zero Current Balance and zero Amount Past Due.
