    What Payment Rating 3 means

    • Ninety days is the point at which most portfolios move an account from collections to recovery, but the rating itself is still purely a day count.
    • For revolving credit this is commonly the cycle in which charge-off planning begins, though the charge-off itself is expressed by Account Status and rating L, not by rating 3.
    • It does not mean the account has been charged off. Rating 3 describes an account that is still on the books and still accruing a past-due balance.
    • It does not mean the account is in collection. Rating G is reserved for the collection condition, and an internally delinquent account has not necessarily reached it.

    When to report 3

    • 1A card issuer reports a revolving account 95 days past due with three missed minimum payments and no payment arrangement.
    • 2A credit union reports an auto loan three cycles behind while the vehicle is being located for repossession.
    • 3A servicer reports a mortgage 90 days delinquent after a failed trial modification plan.
    • 4A private student lender reports a loan three cycles behind after repeated failed contact attempts.

    Reporting rules

    • Keep the rating tied to the day count rather than to your internal risk classification. Moving an account to rating 3 because it was referred to recovery, while it is only 70 days behind, misstates the record.
    • Hold the Date of First Delinquency steady. By rating 3 the DOFD is three months old and is doing real work in the seven-year calculation.
    • Make sure Amount Past Due keeps pace. A rating that advances while the past-due amount stays flat suggests one of the two fields is not being recalculated.
    • Do not jump straight to rating L before the account is actually charged off on your books.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment Rating 3 has to satisfy.

    • Corresponds to Account Status 80 in the delinquency ladder.
    • Requires a Date of First Delinquency that has remained fixed since the delinquency began.
    • Amount Past Due should reflect three missed scheduled payments and must be non-zero.
    • Position 1 of the Payment History Profile must agree with the current rating.
    • Not valid alongside the transfer and sale statuses 61 through 65, which require zero Current Balance and zero Amount Past Due.
