    What Payment Rating 4 means

    • Rating 4 is the fourth rung of the ladder and covers a 30-day window like every other numeric rating.
    • Many revolving portfolios charge off at or shortly after 120 days, so this rating often appears in the last month or two before the account converts to a charge-off record with rating L.
    • It does not mean the account has been sold. A sale to a debt buyer is expressed through the transfer and sale statuses and a K2 segment, not through the rating.
    • It does not mean the balance is uncollectible. Rating 4 is a day count on an account that is still on your books.

    When to report 4

    • 1A card issuer reports a revolving account 125 days past due in the month before its scheduled charge-off.
    • 2A credit union reports an auto loan four cycles behind after a repossession has been ordered but not completed.
    • 3A servicer reports a mortgage 120 days delinquent while a foreclosure referral is being prepared.
    • 4An installment lender reports a loan four cycles behind after a broken payment arrangement.

    Reporting rules

    • Continue reporting monthly at the accurate rating. Going silent on a deeply delinquent account leaves a stale tradeline that misstates the consumer's position in either direction.
    • Do not move to rating L until the charge-off is actually recorded on your books, and make the Account Status agree in the same record.
    • Hold the Date of First Delinquency steady, and make sure it is the delinquency that led to this trajectory rather than a later missed payment.
    • Reconcile Amount Past Due to four missed scheduled payments before filing.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment Rating 4 has to satisfy.

    • Corresponds to Account Status 82 in the delinquency ladder.
    • Requires a Date of First Delinquency, unchanged since the delinquency began.
    • Amount Past Due should reflect four missed scheduled payments and must be non-zero.
    • Position 1 of the Payment History Profile must agree with the current rating.
    • If the account charges off in the following cycle, the record moves to rating L with the charge-off Account Status and the Original Charge-off Amount populated. The DOFD does not change.
