GTerminal Negative Conditions
Payment Rating G: Collection
Payment Rating G means "Collection". The account is in collection. The rating carries that condition on records whose Account Status describes what happened to the account rather than how it was being paid. It is reported in Payment Rating (Field 17B) of the Base Segment, 1 character at position 111.

What Payment Rating G means
- Rating G is a condition, not a day count. It says the account went to collection, which is a different fact from being a specific number of days past due.
- It is the rating that pairs with the collection Account Status. Where the status expresses the collection condition, the rating restates it so that records carrying a terminal status still communicate the account's negative outcome.
- It does not mean charged off. Charge-off is an accounting decision to write the balance off as a loss and carries rating L; an account can be in collection without having been charged off, and vice versa.
- It does not mean sold. A sale to a debt buyer is expressed through the transfer and sale statuses with a K2 segment naming the purchaser, and those statuses require Current Balance and Amount Past Due of zero on the seller's record.
- It does not restart any clock. The Date of First Delinquency is still the original delinquency that led here, and placing an account with a collection agency does not create a new one.
When to report G
- 1A card issuer places a severely delinquent revolving account with a third-party collection agency and reports the collection condition on its own tradeline.
- 2A utility or telecom furnisher reports a consumer account referred to collections after months of non-payment.
- 3A medical or service provider furnishes an account that has moved into a collection workflow.
- 4A collection agency furnishing in its own right reports the account it is working, with a K1 segment naming the original creditor.
Reporting rules
- Use rating G when the account is genuinely in collection, not as a generic label for any severely delinquent account. A 180-day delinquency that has not been referred anywhere is rating 6.
- Carry the original Date of First Delinquency through the collection process. This is the most frequently mishandled part of collection reporting and it directly controls when the tradeline ages off.
- If you are a collection agency or debt buyer furnishing the account, populate the K1 segment with the original creditor's name so the consumer can recognize what the debt is.
- Do not report the same debt as an active collection on two tradelines. If you sold it, your record must reflect the sale rather than continuing to show a collectible balance.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment Rating G has to satisfy.
- Relates to Account Status 93 (account assigned to collection). The status and the rating should tell the same story in the same record.
- Requires a Date of First Delinquency, and that date is the original delinquency on the underlying obligation, not the date of placement.
- Position 1 of the Payment History Profile must agree with the current rating.
- A debt buyer or agency furnishing the account should carry a K1 segment identifying the original creditor, and a purchase should be reflected with a K2 segment naming the party the account was purchased from.
- If the original creditor sold the account, the seller's record uses the transfer and sale statuses 61 through 65, which require Current Balance and Amount Past Due of zero so the balance is not reported twice.
