    What Payment Rating 0 means

    • Rating 0 is an affirmative statement that the account was current at the moment being reported, not merely an absence of information.
    • It is also the correct rating for an account that was paid in full and closed with no delinquency, because paid and current are the same thing from a delinquency standpoint. There is no separate "paid" rating.
    • It does not mean the account has no history. A tradeline that was 90 days late a year ago and has since recovered is rated 0 today, and the older delinquency lives in the Payment History Profile and the Date of First Delinquency.
    • It does not mean the balance is zero. An installment loan halfway through its term with every payment made on time is rated 0 with a substantial Current Balance.
    • Rating 0 with a non-zero Amount Past Due is a contradiction, and it is the single most common Payment Rating error in production files.

    When to report 0

    • 1A credit union reports a 60-month new-auto loan in month 14 with every scheduled payment made on time.
    • 2A borrower pays a personal loan in full and the tradeline closes with a zero balance and no late payments in its history.
    • 3A mortgage servicer transfers a performing loan to another servicer and rates it current at the moment of transfer.
    • 4A card issuer closes a revolving account at the consumer's request while it is paid up to date.
    • 5A consumer cures a 30-day delinquency mid-month and the account is current at the reporting date.

    Reporting rules

    • Report 0 only when the account genuinely had no amount past due as of the reporting period.
    • Do not use 0 as a default when your extract cannot determine the delinquency level. An unknown rating should be researched, because rating a delinquent account current understates real risk.
    • Do not use 0 to unwind older delinquency. Correcting history means correcting the Payment History Profile and the Date of First Delinquency, not overwriting the current rating.
    • If the account is current and the Account Status already says so, leave Payment Rating blank rather than restating it. The field carries delinquency for statuses that cannot express it.

Codes and fields that must agree

A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Payment Rating 0 has to satisfy.

    • Pairs with Account Status 11 (current account). A status 11 record that also needs a rating carries 0.
    • Position 1 of the 24-character Payment History Profile is the current month and must agree with the rating, so a rating of 0 requires a current-month profile character that also says current.
    • Amount Past Due must be zero. A non-zero past-due amount alongside rating 0 is an internal contradiction the amount-logic and status-payment edits are designed to catch.
    • No Date of First Delinquency is implied by rating 0 alone. If a DOFD is present because of older delinquency, that is legitimate and the two coexist.
    • For the transfer and sale statuses 61 through 65, Current Balance and Amount Past Due are both required to be zero, so a rating of 0 on those records is consistent with a balance that has moved to the receiving furnisher.
