What Special Comment Code AI means
- The source's stated purpose is a temporary skip-pay: a defined number of payments moved to the end of the obligation or to a later date.
- AI explains why no payment arrived without the account being delinquent. That is the whole point of the comment.
- AI does NOT mean the payments were waived. Deferred payments are still owed, usually extending the loan or creating a balloon at the end.
- AI differs from forbearance in emphasis: forbearance suspends collection during a hardship, while a deferral moves specific scheduled payments. Some furnishers use them for overlapping situations, so pick the one that matches the agreement you actually made.
- AI is a short-lived comment. It belongs on the record for the deferral window only.
When to report AI
- 1An auto lender grants a holiday skip-a-payment and defers one installment to the end of the loan.
- 2A credit union defers two payments for a member after a natural disaster.
- 3A consumer-finance company approves a one-month deferral so a borrower can cover an emergency expense.
- 4A student-loan servicer defers payments during an eligible in-school or grace period arrangement.
Reporting rules
- Report AI for the cycles the payments are actually deferred, then remove it.
- Do not report the deferred cycles as delinquent. A payment that was not due under the agreement is not a missed payment.
- If the deferral extends the maturity of the loan, update Terms Duration so the schedule on the report matches reality.
- Do not use AI to cover cycles the borrower simply did not pay without an approved deferral.
- If the deferral turns into a long hardship pause, B or C describes the account more accurately.
Codes and fields that must agree
A file can be structurally valid and still be wrong. These are the cross-field conditions Special Comment Code AI has to satisfy.
- Payment Rating and the Payment History Profile for a deferred cycle should show the account as not delinquent, because no payment was contractually due.
- Amount Past Due should be zero for amounts covered by the deferral.
- Terms Duration may need to increase if the deferred payments extend the loan's maturity.
- Current Balance typically holds or rises slightly during a deferral because principal is not being reduced.
- Date of First Delinquency does not move; a deferral granted after a delinquency does not undo the delinquency that already occurred.
