Validation Rules
- Report at most one CCC per record per cycle
- Report a code only while the condition actually exists
- Clear a previously reported code with XR — leaving the field blank keeps the last code attached at the bureaus
- Do not report a bankruptcy here; bankruptcy is carried on the Consumer Information Indicator
Examples
XBXR Common Errors
- Leaving the field blank after a dispute closes instead of sending XR, so the tradeline carries a dispute flag for months
- Using a bankruptcy code that does not exist in this field
Tips & Best Practices
- Use XB while an FCRA/FDCPA dispute is open
- Use XC once the investigation is complete and the consumer still disagrees
- XR is the eraser — blank is not
